A 35-year-old Toronto man died after he was thrown from an SUV onto Highway 401 and struck by three other vehicles during a multi-vehicle crash in southeastern Ontario Sunday night.
John Beer of North York died of his injuries and the 26-year-old female driver of the car was seriously injured in the crash, which occurred between Trenton and Brighton, a news release from the Ontario Provincial Police said.
The male victim was not wearing his seatbelt, police reported.
As a result of the accident, which happened at 11:30 p.m. ET, police closed a section of the highway for almost eight hours.
Other vehicles became involved, including a van that crashed into the back of a tractor trailer. The truck had slowed suddenly to avoid the collision.
The Toyota SUV was travelling eastbound near Wooler Road when it touched the soft shoulder of the highway. The driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over into the eastbound driving lane, throwing the passenger into the passing lane, where he died.
The driver was trapped in the car for about an hour. The Trenton fire department managed to pull her out and she was sent to hospital in Trenton.
Police said charges may be laid.
