A Toronto woman has been charged with concealing the body of her dead baby in a freezer for years before throwing it in a river.

The same woman was charged earlier this year in Peel Region with concealing the body of her dead baby in a separate incident. She was later released on bail.

On Tuesday, Ivana Levkovic, 24, of Toronto was arrested and charged with concealing a body and neglecting to obtain assistance in childbirth.

Police allege that sometime between 2002 and 2003, the woman gave birth in her home, failed to give the baby any assistance and as a result the baby died.

The woman then allegedly placed the baby's body into a plastic bag and stored it in a freezer for several years before throwing the body in the Humber River, police said.

The allegations are based on the account of a witness who came forward in January 2005. The Toronto Police Service's marine unit scoured the river, but no body was found.

"Despite a lack of the physical evidence, the evidence provided by witness is sufficient in this case," said the lead investigator, Det. Sgt. Larry Brien.

"That was an eyewitness who ultimately after a couple of years of a certain amount of guilt decided that they needed to tell us what they had seen," he said.

After the witness came forward, Toronto police began looking for Levkovic, and found her after Peel police contacted them regarding a previous case involving the woman.

Peel police said Levkovic had turned herself in a few days after the remains of a newborn were found April 5 in a plastic bag in a vacant Mississauga apartment when a superintendent entered the unit to make some repairs.

Levkovic is to appear in court on Monday for a pretrial hearing for the charges in Peel Region.

In the latest charges, Levkovic is scheduled to appear in Toronto's College Park Court on Wednesday.
