"I love this city, I love this job, and the Toronto Board of Trade is involved in great work," Grunwald said in a statement posted on the Board of Trade's website. "But I could not turn down this offer to rejoin my old friend Isiah Thomas and the sport that I love."

Grunwald's official title and role with the Knicks has not been revealed.

Thomas, a former NBA great as a player, is the Knicks' head coach and president.

Grunwald's hiring is the latest reunion for the two former teammates at Indiana University. Thomas, the Raptors' former part-owner and executive vice-president, played a role in bringing his friend to Toronto in the 1990s.

Grunwald was hired as the team's GM in March 1998.

The Raptors achieved their greatest success with Grunwald at the helm. The franchise made three straight playoff appearances from 2000 to 2002 and the club blossomed under budding superstars Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.

Grunwald, who became a Canadian citizen in 1999, was fired by the Raptors in April 2004. He remained in Toronto to work at the Board of Trade.

Grunwald joins a Knicks team that finished last in the Eastern Conference last season with a 23-59 record.
