An Air India flight bound for England returned to Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Monday night after a suspicious package was found on board.

Flight 188 left Toronto for Birmingham at around 9:30 p.m. ET. About an hour later, the pilot radioed that he wanted to return to Toronto after a passenger discovered the package on the floor of a washroom.

Const. Pete Brandwood told reporters that the package discovered in an England-bound airplane was suspicious but never posed a danger to those on board the flight.

The airplane returned and taxied to a remote part of the runway, away from the airport's three main terminals. About 150 passengers were removed and taken to the airport's infield terminal.

"The preliminary stage of the investigation indicates that the package was not an explosive device; it contained some tools that were uniquely packaged," police said in a statement.

Peel Regional Police Const. Pete Brandwood said the bomb squad disposed of the package in a controlled explosion.

"There's nothing to say that anybody was in danger, but we can't take that chance. The airport authority can't take that chance, the airline can't take that chance, the captain can't take that chance," said Brandwood.

"Heightened awareness is something is unavoidable on airplanes," he added.

All luggage and cargo from the flight was inspected and passengers were interviewed by police throughout the night before being released Tuesday morning. No one has been detained.

No other flights were been delayed and there were no reported injuries.

In June 1985, a bomb exploded on an Air India flight travelling from Toronto to London. All 329 people on board were killed.
