A Scarborough man faces a handful of charges in connection with a vehicle collision that killed three people, including a mother and her toddler, on Saturday near Whitby.
Syed Zaeshan Naqvi, 25, is charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and driving while under suspension.
Whitby Ontario Provincial Police Const. Dave Woodford said more charges are expected to be laid against Naqvi.
The suspect was originally arrested for impaired driving, Woodford said. Police are still waiting for test results on his blood-alcohol level at the time of the accident.
Dorothy Sauve, 34, of Oshawa and her 17-month-old son Matthew died when their car was hit head-on by a Jeep Cherokee trying to pass another vehicle on Highway 12.
The accident happened north of Whitby on a stretch of the highway marked by a solid centre line, indicating a no-pass area.
A passenger in the Jeep, 24-year-old Salman Javed of Toronto, was also killed.
Another 24-year-old Scarborough man who was a passenger in the Jeep remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
