Teachers voted Wednesday in favour of a proposal to have Ontario elementary school children bring home one less report card each year.

Delegates at the annual meeting of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation, which represents 70,000 teachers and education workers, voted overwhelmingly in favour of urging the province to reduce the number of report cards to two a year from three.

President Emily Noble says two reports would bring elementary schools in line with high schools, and most of all, the change would give teachers more time with students.

"The main thing we're hearing from members is that they're spending all their time testing kids instead of teaching them. It's a tremendous amount of work in terms of report cards," she said. "Let's get on with teaching kids and improving their learning."

The Federation will take the resolution to the minister of education and recommend the best way to implement the changes.

Education Minister Sandra Pupatello has said she is willing to consider the idea.
