A former soldier is being sought for questioning in the killings of a Toronto-area couple at a Mexican resort five months ago, a published report said Wednesday.

Local authorities said the Mexican suspect worked at the resort for about six months before he went missing on Feb. 21, the day after Domenic and Nancy Ianiero were found slain there, the Toronto Star reported.

Quintano Roo Attorney General Bello Melchor Rodriguez told the Mexican news service Noticaribe that Blas Ismael Delgado, 36, is wanted for questioning, said the report.

Dominic Ianiero, 59, and his wife Nancy, 55, were killed at the five-star Barcelo Maya Beach Resort near Cancun, where they had gone to attend their daughter's wedding.

The bodies of the Woodbridge, Ont. couple were found lying in their hotel room with their throats slashed on the morning of Feb. 20, less than two days after they arrived at the resort.

Rodriguez told the Star that he and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation had launched an investigation to find the suspect, who was believed to be in the United States. However, an FBI spokesman told the Star that he was unaware of any such probe.

Mexican authorities have come under fire for initially suggesting the Ianieros' killers were likely Canadian, then naming two female tourists from Thunder Bay, Ont. as suspects.

The Thunder Bay women, who returned to Canada and have not been charged, have consistently maintained their innocence.
