One of the teens facing terrorism-related charges in Ontario has been granted bail, making him the first of 17 suspects arrested in connection with an alleged bomb plot to be released from jail.

The 18-year-old is one of the five youths and 12 men arrested in southern Ontario on June 2 and 3.

The accused, who cannot be named because he was 17 when alleged to have committed the offences, faces charges of belonging to and training with a terrorist organization.

A justice of the peace made the decision Friday in a court in Brampton, Ont., and the teen was expected to be released from jail later in the day.

"The justice of the peace heard a lot of evidence in this case, heard a lot about the allegations from the Crown and heard a lot about the circumstances surrounding my client's life," said the teen's lawyer, Gary Grill.

No details on the decision can be made public because of a sweeping publication ban, but Grill called his client's bail conditions "stringent."

He said the teen appeared relieved at the decision and plans to return home. Grill hadn't spoken to his client by early Friday afternoon.

"I'm sure he'll get home and take advantage of the things he's been deprived of while in jail like air, seeing the sun, being able to shave, getting a decent meal," Grill said.

The lawyer doubted the decision would have an impact on bail hearings of the other accused since the justice must look at the unique allegations and individual circumstances of each of the accused before handing down a decision.

Two weeks ago, a justice of the peace denied bail for the two youngest accused, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old who was 17 at the time of the alleged offences.

However, the two denied bail have sought a second trial before a judge. A decision is expected next week.
