Jetliner in mechanical distress gets military escort to Toronto

A jetliner bound for Ireland landed safely in Toronto on Sunday night after aborting the flight due to problems with the hydraulics.
The Boeing 757 aircraft, carrying eight crew members and 194 passengers in a Thomas Cook Airlines group, took off from Montreal's Trudeau International Airport bound for Shannon, Ireland, but turned back near Quebec City.
Instead of returning to Montreal, however, the plane continued on to Pearson International for reasons that haven't been made public.
It was escorted by a Hercules transport plane based at CFB Trenton, Ont., which was dispatched "just in case [the airliner] needed some assistance," a military spokesman said.
"We were spooling up secondary resources just in case of the worst case scenario," said Trenton Capt. Darrell Steele. "If something was going to happen, we wanted to be prepared."
