Mayor David Miller says he has apologized to Police Chief Julian Fantino for a disparaging remark he made about the beleaguered Toronto Police Service.

Miller says he doesn't think what he said will do lasting harm to their working relationship.

After a news conference at the Toronto Stock Exchange Thursday, Miller said to a visiting dignitary, "Is your police force in jail? Mine is."

The visitor to the stock exchange was Robert Finch, Lord Mayor of the City of London, which is the financial district of London, England.

A local TV-news camera recorded Miller's comment on tape.

Miller was referring to the ongoing corruption controversy that prompted the Toronto Police Service to disband an undercover unit earlier this month.

He now says his words were inappropriate in tone and content.

Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino says it's devastating, and he feels as if someone has driven a stake through his heart.

Miller's explanation for the whole episode is that he was joking with Finch.

He says he was trying to ease the visitor's embarrassment after a joint news conference was dominated by questions about Toronto's police force.

Friday morning, Fantino said he met with Miller, and they had sorted the situation out.

"As far as I'm concerned, the matter is now over," Fantino said in a news release.
