A five-year-old and a three-month-old were treated by emergency services after a man threw a steel block through the window of a family's car while passing them on a Halton Hills, Ont., highway.

Halton Police are describing it as an "atrocious fit of rage while driving."

On Monday, just after 10 a.m. ET, the family was on Highway 7 near Trafalgar Road when they noticed a man driving directly behind them, following too closely and looking for an opportunity to pass, say police.

When the man was passing the family's car, he allegedly threw a block made of steel through his passenger window and into the partially open driver’s window of the family's vehicle.

The block shattered the glass, injuring the driver and showering two children in the back seat with glass fragments, according to police.

A 27-year-old Acton, Ont., man turned himself in after his licence plate was reported to police.

He is facing several charges, including:

  • Mischief endangering life.
  • Dangerous driving.
  • Assault with a weapon.

The man will appear in court on Aug. 4.
