SIU called in after man shot amid interaction with police
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is conducting a probe after a man was shot during an interaction with police in downtown Toronto early on Saturday morning.
At around 2 a.m., Toronto police became involved in a confrontation with a man on the fourth floor of an apartment building on Mutual Street at Gerrard Street East, near Ryerson University.
A 34-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital in serious condition for treatment.
Toronto police have not commented on the circumstances that led up to the gunfire.
On Saturday morning, what appeared to be bullet holes in the walls and blood stains on the carpet were visible at the scene of the shooting.
A neighbour told the CBC's Charlsie Agro that the man was holding a fire extinguisher when he got into an altercation with police.
"They were yelling for him to put it down and he was just screaming," said Kevin Babineau. "By the time I closed my door that's when I heard the first shot, then there were two more shots after that."
The building is owned by Myrmex Non Profit Housing.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the SIU at 416-622-1965 or at 1-800-787-8529 ext. 1965.
The SIU is called in whenever police officers are involved in incidents in which someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
