The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a three-vehicle collision at a traffic stop in Mississauga.

The SIU says two people were sent to hospital late Saturday when a car swerved to avoid a traffic stop by Peel police near the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road East and Central Parkway East.

The car crossed into oncoming traffic and struck two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction, according to the SIU. A 70-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man who were in one of the oncoming vehicles suffered serious injuries.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the incident — which occurred shortly after 10 p.m. — to come forward.

The SIU investigates any incidents of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving police.
