A man who suffered a gunshot wound at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel and Suites was shot in the right arm in the driveway of the hotel according to the Special Investigations Unit which took over the investigation of the shooting Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to the hotel located on Wynford Drive near Eglinton Avenue East and the Don Valley Parkway just after 4 p.m.

The injuries sent the 31-year-old man to hospital in serious condition, according to Toronto EMS. He is now in stable condition.

The SIU is called in whenever someone is killed or seriously injured in a confrontation with police, or there are allegations of sexual assault involving a police officer.

Its mandate is to investigate whether an officer has committed a criminal offence, and whether charges should be laid.

SIU officials said they are tasked only with investigating the incident and cannot say whether or not a suspect is still at large.

If public safety were at risk, they said, police would communicate that to the public.
