An 85-year-old woman is in critical but stable condition after being struck by a minivan in Mississauga, according to Peel Regional Police.

Paramedics rushed the woman to a Toronto trauma centre after she was hit while walking on the north side of Rathburn Road East, just east of Dixie Road, on Saturday around 5:15 p.m.

Const. Lori Murphy said police were called to the scene almost immediately and spent several hours questioning witnesses. The major collisions bureau has taken over the investigation.

It is not clear if the woman was attempting to cross the road when she struck.

The driver of the van stayed at the scene and was not injured in the collision.

Police said Sunday the investigation continues but no charges have been laid.

Rathburn was closed between Dixie and Bough Beeches Boulevard for the investigation but has since reopened.
