Toronto police say a boy in his late teens has been shot this afternoon just southwest of the Scarborough Hospital.
Police say the victim was conscious and breathing. The incident happened near Lawrence Avenue East and Barrymore Road, between Brimley Road and McCowan Road in the city's east end.
Toronto paramedics say they received a call at 2:10 p.m. and have transported one patient to hospital in serious but stable condition. They added the male victim was shot in the lower back.
Sgt. Jason Hillier told reporters the incident began outside a barbershop at 2925 Lawrence Avenue East and ended outside of convenience store at a second plaza about half of a kilometre down the road. At least two suspects fled southbound from the plaza and remain at large, according to police.
Hillier added the area is now considered safe and police are investigating.
Const. Victor Kwong told CBC News that police received multiple calls about gunshots in the area. He said the teen was transported to a hospital in a non-emergency run.
Kwong said the suspects have been described as black or brown, wearing grey hooded sweatshirts and grey track pants, according to 911 callers.
Police say they will be looking for security footage from local businesses in the area.
