Ontario's police watchdog says it is investigating after Toronto police shot and injured a man, 25, while officers were investigating a home invasion in Scarborough on Friday night.

Jason Gennaro, spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit, told reporters that the "police-involved" shooting occurred inside an elementary school yard belonging to the Toronto District School Board.

"I can tell you that several shots were fired in the interaction," he told reporters Saturday.

Gennaro could not say whether anyone fired back at police.

According to preliminary information obtained by the SIU, police received a call about a home invasion at a residence on Benshire Drive, north of McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue East, just after 11 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw a number of people fleeing into the nearby school yard of Bendale Junior Public School, he said.

"There was a short foot pursuit into the school yard. One police officer discharged his firearm," said Gennaro.

One man was shot. He was taken to hospital in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries, said Toronto Paramedic Services.

Gennaro said the injured man, who remains in hospital, is in police custody.

He declined to say how many times the man was shot or where he was hit.

Earlier, police said in a tweet that a suspect allegedly drew a gun on officers.

Police also said that two officers were injured in the incident, but Gennaro said the SIU has no evidence of this.

"My understanding is that there were no officers injured in this interaction," he said.

"The focus of our investigation is on the interaction between the individual and the police officer in the school yard. However, we will be looking at all aspects of the incident."

Gennaro could not say how many suspects are at large. He said the SIU will talk to police about whether there is a risk to public safety as a result of the incident.

He could not say whether the people involved were wearing masks or armed.

The incident occurred over a number of minutes, he said.

SIU investigators are currently trying to obtain surveillance video footage from homes and buildings in the area.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate the shooting. The SIU has assigned one subject officer and three witness officers as part of the investigation.

It also is asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to contact its lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone who may have any video evidence related to the incident is urged to upload that video through the SIU website.
