Two people are in serious condition after they were taken to hospital without vital signs following a fire in the city's east end Tuesday night.
Fire crews were called to a building at 3947 Lawrence Ave., near Orton Park Road at around 7:34 p.m. A second alarm was requested 10 minutes later as crews struggled to contain the blaze at the 10th floor apartment.
At least 12 fire trucks and 45 firefighters finally put out the fire at 7:50 p.m. Firefighters had to crawl on their hands and knees to reach the two people trapped inside.
A man in his 60s and a woman were taken to Scarborough General Hospital without vital signs.
Fire fighters say while the building's fire alarm was activated, there was no sign of working smoke detectors in the unit that caught fire. The damage is estimated at more than $100,000.
