Rescue unit ends search for missing Ajax canoeist
Man had been wearing life-jacket
A rescue unit has called off a marine and aerial search for a canoeist on Lake Ontario who went missing after his canoe capsized Sunday night.
Durham Regional Police said Tuesday that CFB Trenton Air and Sea Rescue is no longer searching for the missing 26-year-old Ajax man. He had been paddling in a canoe with another man before it capsized around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
However, the other man was able to make it to shore.
Police said the missing man was wearing a life-jacket when the canoe overturned. Both the canoe and the life-jacket, along with his paddles, were recovered by the air and sea rescue unit.
Durham police say they continue to maintain a presence on the water.
