Toronto police arrest driver of taxi after lengthy chase
OPP, Durham Regional Police also involved in pursuit of allegedly stolen cab
A man who allegedly stole a taxi was tailed by a police helicopter as he evaded Ontario Provincial Police cruisers, but was arrested amid downtown Toronto traffic on Thursday.
Toronto police helped arrest the suspect, who allegedly stole a Co-op taxi cab from Cobourg — about 112 kilometres east of the city — then led police on a lengthy pursuit along Highway 401 and into the city.
Ontario Provincial Police cruisers and a Durham Regional Police helicopter were involved in the pursuit. Multiple Toronto police cruisers responded as the suspect entered the city.
The suspect was arrested near the intersection of Yonge and Gould Streets, next to the Ryerson University campus, around 12:17 p.m.
Toronto police said the suspect has been handed over to Cobourg police.
