Toronto police are searching for suspects after a 15-year-old boy was shot twice in the back as he stood outside with a group of friends on Wednesday evening.

Police say the shooting happened just before 8 p.m. on Varna Drive, near Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue West.

The victim was standing on a walkway with his brother and three friends when a car pulled up and multiple shots were fired, CBC’s Natalie Kalata reported.

The victim is recovering in hospital. On Thursday he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Police say they don't believe the shooting is gang-related. The victim was not known to police.

Police told CBC News the shooting may be a case of mistaken identity.

Search for vehicle

Police said they were looking for several occupants of a blue, older model Nissan.

The area was site of a shooting last May when a man was shot several times near Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive.
