Niagara Regional Police say a man from St. Catharines, Ont., stopped for a RIDE check in a stolen pickup truck overnight and suddenly drove off when an officer went to check his identity.
According to a police press release, the man stopped for officers on Ontario Street, at the QEW overpass in St. Catharines, at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday.
The man didn’t have a driver's licence, but told the officer his name.
When the officer went back to his cruiser to confirm the man’s identity, police say the driver sped off.
Police say "a short pursuit" ensued, after which the man fled the truck on foot. He was soon apprehended.
The vehicle the man was driving had been stolen three days earlier, police say.
The 31-year-old St. Catharines man was already wanted on possession of stolen property offences, police say.
He now faces an additional five charges including obstructing police, flight from police and driving while disqualified.
