A swastika and an anti-Israel message were spray-painted onto a Thornhill bus shelter overnight, an act that is now being investigated by police.
York Regional Police say the graffiti, which included the words "Fuck Israel," appeared on the bus shelter between midnight and 7 a.m.
Police described the bus shelter as being in the Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue West area.
Ethan Eisen saw the graffiti himself and posted a photo of it on Twitter. He told CBC News that the bus shelter is located at Atkinson Avenue and Spring Gate Boulevard.
Police say the graffiti was cleaned up later on Wednesday morning.
The incident is under investigation. Hate-crime investigators are taking part in the probe.
Police say they will review any available video from the area, or from buses that were passing through. Investigators are also looking to speak with any witnesses.
Meir Weinstein of the Jewish Defence League of Canada told CBC News that he viewed the overnight incident as part of an increase "in anti-Jewish attacks that we're seeing."
He said that similar graffiti incidents have occurred in the area in the past, but not recently.
York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle said Wednesday that police will be stepping up patrols in the area where the bus shelter was vandalized and also in another part of Thornhill where anti-Muslim graffiti was found just a few days ago.
Nicole said the patrols are meant "to deter any additional incidents and to assure the community we are taking it seriously and we are out and actively watching for this type of thing."
