Kingston Road and Beechgrove Dri Toronto, ON

Toronto police are conducting a safety initiative this morning along a stretch of road in the city's east end that's been prone to excessive speeding.

Traffic officers with 43 Division are targeting the intersection near Kingston Road and Beechgrove Drive, in Scarborough, after a recent police study found vehicles in the area were regularly traveling 20 to 30 km/h above the posted 60 km/h speed limit.

The CBC's Trevor Dunn said what police were finding confirmed the results of the study and that one vehicle they stopped was traveling 87 km/h.

Along with educating drivers on the speed limit, the safety initiative that began around 6 a.m. was focused on drivers operating vehicles without insurance, suspended drivers and other traffic offences.

Dunn said police handed one male driver a $240 fine for not wearing his seatbelt.
