A 27-year-old man faces a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Peter Nguyen, the 26-year-old man shot on Yonge Street near Lawrence Avenue East in February.

Thanh Tung Phan, 27, faces first-degree murder charge

A man has been charged in the shooting death of Peter Nguyen, the 26-year-old man shot multiple times in a busy shopping area of Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue West in February.

Facing a first-degree murder charge is Thanh Tung Phan, 27. He was arrested as part of a series of police raids that took place across the city early Thursday.

Phan is also facing two charges of criminal harassment. It is not immediately clear how those charges relate or don't relate to the first-degree murder charge.

The accused was expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Nguyen was shot multiple times as he stepped outside a restaurant on Feb. 4 at Yonge Street, near Melrose Avenue. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting took place at 9:30 p.m. on a section of Yonge Street lined with restaurants and boutiques.

At the time, police described it as a targeted killing and said Nguyen was known to police.
