Toronto police say a young child has died after being found in a vehicle in the west end of the city.

Peel Paramedics responded to the scene near Burnhamthorpe and Mill Roads on the border of Mississauga and Toronto around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The car was in a parking lot outside a condo tower.

Police say the child was left in the vehicle, but it's unclear for how long. The temperature at 2 p.m. Thursday was 26 C under sunny skies, with a humidex of 31, according to Environment Canada.

Tatiana Gonzalez, who lives in the building, said a fellow resident alerted security after seeing the child in the vehicle. Security officers broke the car's window to remove the child, Gonzalez said.

One person is now in custody.
