The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called after a fire broke out at a downtown restaurant with an apartment above it overnight.

Eight fire trucks and 35 firefighters responded to the blaze on Bathurst Street just south of Davenport at around 3 a.m.

The fire was put out a short time later, but crews were still on scene at 6 a.m. because the blaze did re-ignite a couple of times.

Officials say the fire likely started in the restaurant or basement of the building, as the ground floor of the building was fully engulfed in flames.

The resident of the apartment above the restaurant got out safely, no one was injured in the fire.
