It turned heads and made headlines, it drew cheers and jeers — mission accomplished for Alex Kavanagh, the fashion designer behind the hockey stick dress sported this week by Miss Universe Canada Chanel Beckenlehner.

"We knew it would get a lot of attention," Kavanagh told CBC News. 

"If you could see these pageants — they're getting more extravagant and crazier every year. So to compete you have to go big or go home."
