A 22-year-old man remains in critical condition after he was struck by a car while crossing Steeles Avenue near Bathurst Street early Monday.
Police say the man was struck at about 1:40 a.m. He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with severe head injuries. The driver of the car remained at the scene.
Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe told CBC News the man was trying to cross Steeles from south to north and was not using a marked crosswalk.
“Any time you’re not crossing at a marked crosswalk, you are putting yourself in danger,” he said. “In this particular case, the individual could have crossed at the crosswalk, it was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50 metres west, and he likely would have been safe.”
Steeles was closed to traffic while police investigated. The street was reopened just after 6:30 a.m..
