Man charged in fatal Gaethan Kitadi birthday shooting
Kitadi, 20, shot dead in apartment building lobby last November
A man is facing a second-degree murder charge in the shooting of Gaethan Kitadi, a 20-year-old man shot in an apartment building lobby after asking uninvited guests to leave his birthday party in November.
Charged with second-degree murder is Shane Raheim Chandon, 20, of Ajax.
Kitadi was celebrating his 20th birthday on Nov. 10 at his apartment located at 11 Main St., near Kingston Road in the city's east end.
He was escorting an uninvited guest out of the building when an argument started in the lobby and he was shot.
Police responding to the call had to fight through a large crowd of party-goers to get to Kitadi. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Some witnesses left the scene
Police described a "chaotic" scene at the apartment building and said some witnesses left before speaking to police.
Police said the party had been promoted on social media, though the people who organized the event were very careful about who was admitted to the building.
Much of the confrontation that preceded the shooting was captured on security cameras.
Last November police said Kitadi was not known to police and "clearly didn’t lead a lifestyle that would lead him into this."
