A man who has worked as Santa Claus at several Toronto-area malls and operates a daycare was in court Thursday after being charged with five counts of child pornography.

Shawn Chiasson, 37, was arrested Wednesday after police raided an Oshawa home, seizing several computers and hundreds of images.

He will be held in custody until Monday.

Chiasson has worked as Santa Claus at several malls in the Greater Toronto Area and operates the Kids Matter Family Daycare in Oshawa. Police say he also operated two other daycares with the same name in Brampton and Ajax.

The news surprised many, including one of Chiasson's neighbours.

"I'm still in disbelief and shock because there are so many children running around here," said a woman who did not give her name.

Police have said it appears that none of the images seized were of children under the suspect's care.

"It's always concerning when individuals like this are so entrenched with children," Det. Randy Norton.

Police are still trying to identify children in the photographs and have asked any parents who employed Chiasson to come forward.

Chiasson had no criminal history

Some wondered how Chiasson was able to work with children as a mall Santa.

"Is there any background checks or police reference checks? Are there vulnerable sector checks that are done in regards to stuff like that?" one woman asked.

Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd., which owns two of the malls where Chiasson worked, said it uses third-party groups to screen applicants.

"We rely on our agencies to fully and completely screen their employees, including background checks," a statement to CBC News said.

Police have said screening would have turned up little because Chiasson did not have a criminal history.
