A Toronto couple faces child abandonment charges after police say two young children were left in a van parked in a casino parking lot while their parents gambled inside.

Police say they found two children — aged three and five years old — sleeping inside a van parked outside the Great Blue Heron Casino in Scugog, Ont., on Tuesday.

Police say the children showed signs of being cold with outside temperatures near the freezing mark. Neither of the children required medical attention. Police say the van was unlocked.

The mother of the children and her husband were arrested by officers. The children were taken into protective custody by the Children's Aid Society.

A 58-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both from Toronto, are each charged with two counts of child abandonment.

Police have withheld their names to protect the identities of the children.
