A veteran Toronto school trustee has faced a long recovery after a fire broke out in her High Park home six months ago.

Irene Atkinson has no memory of the fire that tore through her home in March, which nearly took her life.

"I heard I was dead and the fire department resuscitated me," Atkinson told CBC News in a recent interview.

Firefighters found her just a few inches from the front door of her century-old home.

She ended up in a coma and had a long spell in hospital.

For now, Atkinson is living with one of her daughters, as she waits for her home to be restored to the way it was.

"One day, I’ll get back into my house, that's what's keeping me going," she said.
