Hundreds of people gathered at a Toronto church on Monday to pay tribute to the life of a young girl who died after being struck by a minivan last week.

Seven-year-old Georgia Walsh was the daughter of Conservative Party president John Walsh. She had three brothers.

Her family has asked the media for privacy as they deal with the tragedy of losing their little girl, though they released a statement Monday about Georgia.

"Georgia was a special girl and though her passing leaves a giant hole in our hearts and our lives, the outpouring of love in the last five days speaks to who she was," the family said in the statement.

Her funeral was held on Monday afternoon. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Kathleen Wynne were among those who attended.

Police say Georgia was struck and fatally injured by a minivan at the intersection of McRae Drive and Millwood Road last Wednesday.

Since she died, mourners have put up pink ribbons in the neighbourhood as a memorial.

"The pink ribbons that line our streets have told us how much you loved Georgia and how we share this grieving with so many," the Walsh family said in the statement.

Some residents in the area have called on the city to install more signs or speed bumps to try to prevent a similar tragedy.
