A fatal crash involving teens en route to their school prom near Peterborough, Ont., has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl and injured three other people.

It's not been confirmed whether the girl who died was also bound for the prom, but the Ontario Provincial Police said the collision occurred between two cars, both of which were heading eastbound on Wednesday night on a county road west of Peterborough.

One vehicle contained just the driver; the other car was carrying four occupants.

Police said the 18-year-old driver of the car carrying four occupants lost control, causing it to crash into a telephone pole.

Few other details were available.
