A five-year-old girl is dead and her mother is in hospital with head injuries after being struck by a car Friday afternoon in north Toronto.
Police said the girl and her mother were crossing at an intersection at Wedgewood Drive and Yonge Street at about 2:30 p.m. when they were hit by a car, driven by a woman in her 20s.
The vehicle inexplicably accelerated into the intersection, according to police.
The mother was thrown onto the hood of the car, while the child was pinned under the vehicle. Onlookers frantically tried free the child from under the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.
The girl was rushed to the Hospital For Sick Children in downtown Toronto where she died just before 4 p.m. local time.
Police are investigating, but no charges have been laid.
