A driver is facing charges after a pedestrian collision in Toronto earlier this month that killed the seven-year-old daughter of Conservative Party of Canada president John Walsh.
Georgia Walsh died July 16 after she was struck by a minivan in the Bayview Avenue and Millwood Road area in Toronto's Leaside neighbourhood. She died in hospital.
In a news release issued Thursday, police said the 50-year-old driver of a Toyota Sienna has been charged with failing to stop at a red light and careless driving.
Georgia Walsh's death triggered an outpouring of condolences for the family.
The Walsh family issued a statement Thursday thanking police for their work and asking for privacy.
"At this time we pray for all the families involved in this tragedy," said the statement. "We would like to thank the thousands of individuals who have sent their thoughts and prayers. The family asks those who wish to contribute to Georgia's legacy to make a donation to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children."
