Motorists in the city will need to negotiate a major closure this weekend, as the Gardiner Expressway will be shut down for spring maintenance.

The busy thoroughfare will be closed from Carlaw Avenue to Highway 427 starting at 10 p.m. ET Friday until 12 p.m. ET Sunday, April 27.

Construction crews will set out to repair potholes, repaint fading pavement markings, inspect bridges and clear catchment basins. City officials say a full closure is required to ensure the safety of workers.

The city suggests motorists use Lake Shore Boulevard, The Queensway, Richmond Street, King Street, Queen Street and Adelaide Street as an alternative to the Gardiner.

Starting on April 28th, the city will begin a major construction project, expected to run until December 2016, that will result in a single lane closure in both directions. All lanes will temporarily reopen for the 2015 Pan Am Games in the summer.
