Garbage truck driver charged in child's death
The driver of a City of Toronto garbage truck that struck and killed a child last month is now facing charges.
Toronto police said Thursday they have charged the unnamed 64-year-old driver with careless driving and not turning safely.
Five-year-old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger died March 7 when she was hit by the truck while crossing the street near her east Toronto school.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kayleigh was one of four children who were hit by the truck at Cliffside Drive and East Haven Drive, which is close to the intersection of Midland Avenue and Kingston Road.
Two other children — a six-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl — were taken to hospital with minor injuries. A fourth child was struck but not injured.
The driver is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on June 6,
