A fight that erupted outside the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre overnight has left one man dead and sent another to hospital, police say.

Toronto police say that a party had been taking place at the cultural centre on Titan Road, near Islington Avenue and The Queensway, as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the Tibetan new year.

A poster on the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre website describes a night party taking place from 11 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

After that party was scheduled to end, at 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, police received a call about a fight.

At the scene, they found a man suffering from obvious injuries.

That man was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim is believed to have been in his 30s.

At about 3:35 a.m., a car was pulled over for speeding in Peel Region, at The Queensway and Dixie Road.

The officer quickly discovered that a passenger in the vehicle that had been pulled over was suffering from stab wounds.

An ambulance was called and the passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

That passenger attended the same party in Toronto.

The vehicle was turned over to Toronto police and the driver was being interviewed by investigators.

Staff Insp. Greg McLane told CBC News that police believe that there are dozens of people who would have seen the fight taking place outside the cultural centre.

"We absolutely want to reach out to members of the Tibetan community," McLane said.

"They might have thought it was just a fight that went on, but they have to realize that somebody lost their life here…and it’s necessary that they come forward," he added.

McLane said that police are working on some leads, though they want to hear from the people who were present at the party.
