Police closed the intersection of Queen Street East and Jarvis Street Friday afternoon after a female pedestrian was struck by a dump truck and killed.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. and quickly shut down the intersection.

Police also closed both the northbound and southbound lanes of Jarvis Street between Richmond and Shuter to investigate.

Witness Gokul Balasingam said the pedestrian was crossing on a red light.

"She was crossing and she got hit," Balasingam told CBC News.

"I was pretty shocked at the whole thing. I've never seen someone get run over like that."

Balasingam said he recognized the victim, who used to come into the pizza shop he owns at Sherbourne and Dundas Streets.

He did not know her well, but said she did not speak English and came into his shop two to three times per week.

Police re-opened Queen Street early Friday evening.

The 502 streetcar is diverting eastbound at Church Street due to the collision, according to the TTC.
