The northbound lanes of Allen Road reopened Wednesday evening after being closed for the afternoon commute for a police investigation into a drive-by shootout.

Police said they received a call at around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday for the sound of gunshots in the area of Yorkdale Road and Allen Road.

They said several callers reported seeing people in two cars shooting at each other, and that a gun was seen.

"The occupants of the vehicles were shooting at each other going northbound on the Allen Expressway," Toronto Police Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook told CBC News.

Police confirmed that gunfire came from both vehicles and that the guns and gangs unit, the Emergency Task Force and plainclothes officers descended on the scene.

They said several shell casings were found on Allen Road, but investigators did not locate any victims.

Police said they had a description of the two vehicles but did not disclose any details.
