Suspect nicknamed for disguises appears in court
A man who police allege repeatedly changed disguises to rob more than a dozen Toronto banks over two years has been arrested.
Police say the suspect nicknamed the Mummy Bandit, the Thriller Bandit and the Joker Bandit for his disguises is facing 36 charges.
They say he's linked to robberies at 16 downtown banks between August 2012 and late June of this year.
Police say the robber grew more aggressive over time, eventually resorting to violence and carrying weapons such as knives and guns.
Investigators say Brandon Michael Smith, 26, of Toronto, was arrested Thursday following tips from the public.
He is charged with robbery, robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, weapons dangerous and assault with a weapon.
Smith appeared in court Friday and was remanded until July 11.
