The Official Christmas Number 1 is a coveted top spot in the British music world but in an unlikely move, Canadian pop star Justin Bieber sabotaged his own chance at the title.
In the final hours of the race, Bieber's song Love Yourself was neck-and-neck with a tune called A Bridge Over You, which was sung by a group of nurses, doctors and others from England's National Health Service's Lewisham and Greenwich Choir.
When Bieber heard about his worthy musical opponents, he took to Twitter to urge his 72 million followers to throw their support behind the charity single to push its sales ahead of his own.
I'm hearing this UK Christmas race is close...but the @Choir_NHS single is for charity. So...— @justinbieber
His request was retweeted nearly 60,000 times and it seems like Beliebers agreed to help out because just hours later, the choir overtook Bieber's single.
"This is what it's all about," tweeted Bieber. "Merry Christmas :)"
By the end of the race, the NHS Choir reached 127,000 sales, defeating Bieber's song, reports the BBC who is behind the chart.
Bieber still managed to make a major mark on the charts, however, taking three of its top five spots with Love Yourself in second place, Sorry in third and What Do You Mean in fifth. All of those songs are on the singer's latest album, Purpose.
