2014 starts with shooting, car crash in Toronto's east end
1 man in coma, others injured in east-end shooting and car crash
Police are investigating a shooting and car crash that followed just a few hours after 2014 began.
One man is in serious condition with life-threatening injuries after a shooting happened in the early hours of New Year’s Day at the Hickory House, near McNicoll Avenue and Brimley Road, during a party.
The victim, a man in his 20s, was being driven in a car that soon after was involved in a multi-vehicle crash a few kilometres away near Brimley Road and Lawrence Avenue East.
"It's possible they fled the scene when the shooting occurred at the hickory house, so it's quite possible they were trying to get him to the hospital," said 33 Division Staff-Sgt. Jeff Taylor. "I'm worried about my victim."
The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital were he remains in a coma. There were four other occupants in the car, all taken to hospital. One woman in serious condition.
Police said the shooting happened inside the restaurant but the majority of the 200 witnesses there at the time of the shooting were gone before police arrived.
The only person talking appears to be a driver of a vehicle that was travelling past the restaurant at the time.
No names have been released.
