Two workers on a road crew in Alliston were sent to hospital — where one man later died — after they were struck by a vehicle while painting lines early Friday.

The OPP says a man and woman were painting lines on Victoria Street just before 3 a.m. when they were struck by a pickup truck.

Police say the man — a volunteer firefighter — was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. He later died in hospital.

The woman was treated at a local hospital and is listed in serious but stable condition.

Police say the male driver of a pickup truck involved in the collision fled the scene. He was arrested nearby and faces charges of impaired driving, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and causing bodily harm.

Victoria Street between King and Paris in Alliston — which is located about an hour north of Toronto — remains closed while police investigate.
