Tories choose replacement for veteran MLA

The Progressive Conservative party has selected a candidate to replace veteran MLA Peter Trynchy who is retiring after representing the Whitecourt-Ste. Anne constituency for 30 years.

Trynchy, who is the last original member of the Lougheed government, is retiring from politics at the next provincial election.

Whitecourt mayor, George Vanderburg, won the nomination by more than 700 votes at a meeting on the weekend.

Vanderburg defeated Terry Slemko of Onoway for the nomination.

A provincial election is expected in the spring of 2001.
