City councillors in Thunder Bay voted to extend the drainage rebate program to all homes in the city Monday night.

Homeowners are being urged to take advantage of a program that offers them rebates for installing sump pumps and backflow prevention valves. The program has recently been expanded to all Thunder Bay residents. (CBC)

The program gives homeowners up to half the cost of a sump pump, back-flow prevention valve or disconnecting weeping tile from the sewer.

The city's manager of infrastructure and operations said the program could continue to be expanded.

"If we do 2014 to the entire city, it can very well be that 2015 might also include businesses or other buildings that may have been impacted or are in areas of concern,” Darrel Matson said.

Another option raised was covering the complete cost of sump pumps or valves for those who cannot afford home repairs.
