Over 300 athletes from across Canada are in Thunder Bay this week skiing the trails during three national events.
The city is hosting the World Junior and World Under 23 Championship Trials as well as the World Championships Senior Sprint Trials and Ontario Cup.
Amanda Holdsworth is the event's co-chair of marketing and sponsorship.
She said the skiing community plays a big role in the races. Even some of the trophies are made in the city.
"We always like to focus in on the local community we have here in Thunder Bay, so the awards actually we do all locally," said Holdsworth.
Holdsworth said volunteers are taking some of the athletes into their homes.
To combat the lack of snow, about 100 volunteers spent two weeks moving snow onto the trails from the bush.
The competitions wrap up at the Lappe Nordic Ski Centre on Sunday.
