Thunder Bay schools remain in 'hold and secure' status

Police continue to monitor the safety of students at two Thunder Bay-area schools because of what Lakehead school board officials are calling "a family matter.”

(Nicole Ireland/CBC)For the third straight day, CD Howe and Kakabeka Falls elementary schools were placed in a “Hold and Secure” status on Wednesday. Director of Education Catherine Siemieniuk said it was a precaution taken because of information received from police.
“It's a family matter that impacts both of those schools,” Siemieniuk said.
“Hold and Secure is initiated usually when there's a threat that's prominent, and as I say, this is a precautionary matter and … students remain in the building.”

(Supplied)Siemieniuk said police are on site during bus drop-off and pickup times at the beginning and end of the school day. Each of the two schools has about 155 students. Siemieniuk said Board officials would re-evaluate the situation on Wednesday, in consultation with police.
"I can't emphasize enough that this is a precautionary measure,” she said. “Student safety is our first priority."
